It has been a different and difficult cattle trading season to date and recently complicated by the appearance of mico plasma bovis leaving many potential buyers who have positive tested stock and willing sellers unsure whether or not to sign up to deals that may or may not be completed.
Earlier in the season many herds were listed at $2000 and above with few changing hands. They appeared to be priced proportionate to the milk price but the market disagreed.
April and May have probably been the busiest months for trading although prices have lacked excitement for sellers. There is good value for buyers with a cross section still available.
Annual stud sales have bucked the trend with prices fully firm on last year. Buyers have been prepared to pay well for two or three animals.
The China export market has set the price for yearling jersey heifers.
It would appear that few farmers are aware of the effect the increased value of fat will have on their milk cheque this and future seasons.
Our three agents Grant Aiken, Karen Fitzgerald and Ross Riddell would welcome your livestock enquires.
Wishing you well for the 18/19 season.
