Jersey Future Success!

The Jersey Future joint programme between Jersey NZ and LIC is notching up successes!

First established in 2017, the programme initially offered Jersey NZ members the opportunity to purchase high quality, great value bulls.  Members were encouraged to invest in Jersey Future to contribute to the genetic gain of the Jersey breed and support Jersey NZ through sales and royalties.

Now in it’s fourth sales season, the programme is no longer restricted to Jersey NZ members and both the number of farms involved and straws sold annually continue to rise.

While the bulls are genomically selected, the first daughter proven results will be available this coming spring.  Bulls in the programme are already being used as contract mating sires by LIC, and now a bull from the 2018 team has been selected for potential inclusion in the 2020 Premier Sires team.

Wee Burn Desi Don

Don is an exciting 2018 Jersey Future bull from the Wee Burn stud outside Te Awamutu.

He is out of a high producing Kingpin dam with a BW of 328, PW & LW’s of over 400. Kpin Dee is a great example of production and type, and it’s no surprise with Terrific and Kingpin featuring in this solid pedigree. On the maternal line, the pedigree is going all the way back to the well-known bull, Willand ADS Samual.

Don also has a half-brother, Wee Burn Misty Donny in the current 2020 Jersey Future line-up, confirming the confidence in this family.

“We are delighted with the milestone announcement Wee Burn Desi Don has been named as possible inclusion into LICs 2020 Premier Sires team.  LICs Premier Sires product is recognised as the pinnacle benchmark delivering outstanding bull teams to NZ farmers. The aim of our program is to help increase the genetic diversity of Jersey bulls in AI and to provide an important service where our members can contribute directly.  Our members who have nominated outstanding bulls to this program and the members and wider Jersey farmers who support Jersey Future by purchasing semen can be very proud of this achievement.”

Steve Ireland – Convenor Jersey NZ Genetics Committee

Desi Don is owned and bred by Glenn & Chantal Wilson of GPS 2007 Ltd, Te Awamutu.  “When we first heard about it we were shocked at first. Having a bull selected for Premier Sires is every breeders dream. To be a part of history in having our bull be the first Jersey Future Bull selected for the Premier Sires is pretty awesome. This is a family we are highly fond of and believe in, a family we rate as one of our top families in the herd. For many years we have bred for production and type, we believe Wee Burn Desi Don will offer this to farmers. Thank you to LIC and Jersey New Zealand for giving us this opportunity to showcase our genetics.”
